Thomas Byczkowski is a journalist and photographer based in Hamburg, Germany.His work has appeared in newspapers and magazines such as German Brand Eins, GEO.de, Mare, Stern and Zeit Wissen, in El País as well as in Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Bilanz and Automobilrevue. He shot campaigns for the NGOs Associação Comunitária Monte Azul and Circo Ponte das Estrelas in Brazil. Part of his work about the people of the Rio Doce was published in Carta Capital in Brasil. Thomas has been working as lecturer and instructor for photogaphy in Studienkolleg Hamburg, where he challenged participating young students from all over the world to produce a body of work on the theme "Home" during a two semester stint. This particular workshop resulted in an exhibition and an accompanying catalogue organized and published by him at the end of the term. His first photo book was published by Bertelsmann Stiftung in 2019. His 2020-project about Rio Doce was pre-selected for Paraty em Foco, the international Photography festival in Paraty, Brazil. It received a honorable mention in the ND Awards 2020 international photography contest. Part of his project was used by German NGO Misereor as key visual for their fundraising campaign throughout Germany, accompanying stories published by Misereor in their Magazine "Frings" and the NGO's website. He has been a winner in the contest "Decade of Change 2022" and the "Portrait of Humanity 4" of the British Journal of Photography ((BJP) - "Portrait of Humanity 4" is published by Hoxton Mini Press. His work has been selected for the virtual exhibition "Edition 365" by the BJP and for the traveling exhibition of the Martin Lagois Contest.  His pictures have been shown at the Photo 2022 in Melbourne and the Indian Photography Festival.His project about Lithium mining in Portugal was chosen for the „Coups de Cœur“ contest by ANI at the Visa pour l’image 2022 in Perpignan, France.Thomas' work on the last lignit coal mine in Germany is part of an ongoing exhibition in the Martin Lagois Contest of 2024. The same year the German Deutsche Bahn Stiftung launched a country wide travelling exhibition about volunteering in Germany. Thomas provided all texts for the promoted persons. Later in 2024 he travelled to Ecuador to photograph people that fight against mining in their comunities for his exhibiton on mining and its consequences. This exhibition was shown in the University of Essex in 2025.In 2025, his second photobook on refugees in Germany - in the making during the year 2024 - was published by Bertelsmann Stiftung in Germany. Pictures from it made it to the shortlist of the Global Peace Photo Award. In January he was chosen by German Stiftung Kulturwerk to receive a grant for his planned project about the Shuar people and their resistance against copper mining on their soil at the source of the Amazon in Ecuador. For the world climate forum COP30 in Belém, Brazil, he was a participant in the group exhibition "Climate Elders" by the photographer's network 1in6by2030.com, which gathered world wide attention.Thomas is available for assignments via the contact form in the menu.
